The Via Julia Augusta and Greek-Roman Gaul itinerary offers two half day trips to discover the historical legacy of Imperial Rome in Liguria.<\/h4>\n

The Via Julia Augusta and Greek-Roman Gaul itinerary starts with Ventimiglia<\/strong>,\u00a0where you can visit\u00a0the remains\u00a0of the\u00a0Roman city of Albintimilium<\/strong>,\u00a0crossed by the\u00a0Via Julia\u00a0Augusta, paved with\u00a0white limestone,\u00a0which intersected with the decumanus maximus.\u00a0 There, you can visit\u00a0the thermal baths<\/strong>, the theater,<\/strong>\u00a0 the houses of the nobility, the\u00a0ancient living quarters furnished with rich\u00a0mosaics<\/strong> and ornaments, including many important treasures recovered from archaeological excavations.<\/p>\n

The trip continues to La\u00a0Turbie<\/strong>,\u00a0where it is possible to visit the Trophy\u00a0of Augustus<\/strong>, an impressive\u00a0Roman monument\u00a0which is located\u00a0480 meters\u00a0above sea level, and now\u00a0overlooks the\u00a0Principality\u00a0of Monaco.<\/strong>\u00a0The monument\u00a0was erected\u00a0in the years\u00a07-6\u00a0BC\u00a0in honor\u00a0of Emperor\u00a0Augustus\u00a0to commemorate the\u00a0military expedition\u00a0of 15\u00a0BC in which\u00a0Drusus and Tiberius conquered 46 Alpine\u00a0tribes, and it served to\u00a0demarcate\u00a0the border\u00a0between Italy\u00a0and Narbonese Gaul along the Via Julia\u00a0Augusta.<\/p>\n

Then, on to\u00a0Nice<\/strong>: Nikaia,\u00a0as it was\u00a0christened by the Greeks\u00a0<\/strong>who founded it,\u00a0has\u00a0a vast archaeological site dating from Roman times\u00a0on the hill\u00a0of Cimiez<\/strong>,\u00a0with amphitheater,\u00a0arena, thermal baths<\/strong>, and an early Christian basilica surrounded\u00a0by\u00a0olive trees.\u00a0 The site is home to the legendary\u00a0jazz festival held each year.\u00a0 In\u00a0Cimiez\u00a0you can also\u00a0visit the\u00a0Chagall Museum<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Matisse Museum<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
